Memory Box / Retablo / Nicho Making:    Cancelled   Thursday, January 21
6:30 – 8:30   $45.00       Instructor:  Jane Corley
jane c nicho box 2

*Nichos* are made from mixed media and traditionally combine elements from Roman Catholicism, mestizo spirituality, and popular culture. Characteristically “nicho” objects have different names throughout Central and South America: they may be called retablo or by other local names.

Do the holidays or the dark days of winter make you feel a bit melancholy?  Do you spend time thinking about those you love or have loved, and wishing to make something to honor them that also reflects your unique creativity?  Jane will share with you the theory behind these highly individualized works of art,  but the majority of our time will be spent working on your shrine.  The focus of the class will be on helping you make something you can be really proud of, and that doesn’t look sloppy or formulaic.
You can anticipate finishing the project in class if you don’t need to do any background painting of the interior of your box, so please decide if you want to do that beforehand or let us help you line your box with materials we have on hand, including cloth, paper, foil — things that don’t need a lot of drying time.
jane nichobox one for sure
Here’s what you should plan to bring:
 — A cigar box or similar-sized sturdy box suitable for lots of embellishing, painted or not, per the above. Other good candidates include small flower boxes, old jewelry boxes, small drawers, etc.  A great excuse to hit the thrift store!
The being you want to honor with your shrine — is it a pet, a parent, a child, a deity?  Images/statues/personal effects/perhaps a writing you would like to associate with the person … use your imagination and bring these along.  More is better here.   We can help you get it arranged and edited as needed.
— Any “bling” you want to include, for example bottle caps, glitter, rhinestones, etc.
What we will supply:
– Random decorative items
— Hot glue guns and glue sticks; craft adhesive for other objects
— Paper and cloth for lining the box (if desired)

Have you got some small issues nagging you – some projects that either aren’t quite coming together or you can’t figure out how to attach a closure?  Maybe you just want to learn how to wire wrap an earring so  you can create a pair for your aunt’s birthday.
You just need a little help.  We have the tools and can help teach you what you need to know without a formal class – you don’t have to buy anything unless we get crazy with the materials and then the fees will be at cost.

With the Zentangle Method, anyone can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns.  And even though it calls for a specified series of steps, it leads to creative expression that transcends its own rules.  You can use the Zentangle approach as a tool to deliberately focus your thoughts.

In Beginning Zentangle, you will learn a minimum of nine Zentangle patterns by completing two Zentangle tiles.  You will receive a beginners Zentangle drawing kit and step-out instructions for 16 patterns which you may use to take home and practice!

Ready to learn more tangles?  In Zen 2, you will complete this darling heart project and learn twelve tangles in the process!  NOT NECESSARY To have taken Zen 1!!
